Within the prison system, a program where horses and humans connect and heal together through the next chapter of their lives.
It’s been said that Second Chances are not given to make things right, but… to prove we can be better, even after we fall. Nowhere is that more evident than at theSecond Chances Farm, at the Lowell Correction Institute, in Ocala, FL. Banixx is proud to be an avid supporter of Second Chances Farm. We provide them with the complete line of Banixx Horse and Pet Care products. This is the first and only program for women within the prison system. Here, horses and humans connect and heal together through the next chapter of their lives.
This wonderful program connects donated horses with women “interns”. Many are thoroughbreds, some injured for life and others that are being rehabilitated for other reasons. Both are looking for a second chance in their own lives. Perhaps even a new career for the women for which there is not only a great need, but a great demand.
Those lucky enough to be accepted into the Second Chances program begin with comprehensive equine education. This is followed by “hands-on” work on the farm. This is where they learn grooming, physical care, farrier skills, nutrition, rehabilitation, training, and riding skills. Each of the 15 plus women is given four or five horses to care for. Additionally, they assist with the rest of the herd. Upon completion of the course, the graduates earn a certificate of equine competency and care that is recognized as an important occupational qualification by the State of Florida.
